When new HGV licence changes were introduced to address driver shortages across the UK, many within the transport industry expressed concern that these reforms may prioritise speed over safety.
At Ballards, we believe that while supporting driver recruitment is important, it should never come at the cost of experience, thorough training, or public safety.
Understanding the Concern
The government’s revised testing process allows drivers to progress more quickly through the licensing stages, with the aim of tackling the UK’s shortage of qualified HGV drivers. While the intention is clear, the question remains: are new drivers receiving enough experience behind the wheel before taking responsibility for large, heavy vehicles?
Previously, drivers were required to pass their Category C (rigid vehicle) test before moving on to Category C+E (articulated vehicle). Under the new system, this step can be skipped, allowing trainees to go straight to the C+E test. This significantly shortens the training process but potentially reduces the time new drivers spend developing crucial skills in handling smaller vehicles first.
Experience Cannot Be Fast-Tracked
Driving a heavy goods vehicle demands far more than basic road knowledge. It requires judgement, spatial awareness, quick thinking, and the ability to stay calm under pressure. These skills come from time, training, and real-world experience.
At Ballards, our professional drivers are highly trained, not only in operating vehicles safely but also in maintaining focus, anticipating hazards, and managing long or complex routes. That level of professionalism is what keeps our teams, our clients, and other road users safe.
Why Safety Comes First
While the logistics sector is facing pressure to fill vacancies quickly, relaxing safety standards risks creating long-term problems. Inexperienced drivers behind the wheel of large vehicles increase the risk of accidents, damage, and injury.
Our view is simple: road safety should never be compromised to solve short-term workforce challenges. Proper training takes time, and the industry needs to invest in that time to ensure new drivers enter the workforce with full confidence and competence.
Ballards Commitment to Higher Standards
For over four decades, Ballards has built its reputation on professionalism, care, and reliability. We continue to:
-
Invest in extensive driver training and ongoing development.
-
Encourage mentoring between experienced and new drivers.
-
Maintain rigorous vehicle safety checks and compliance standards.
-
Promote awareness around mental and physical wellbeing for drivers.
By taking this approach, we help raise industry standards rather than lower them.
Looking Ahead
As new licensing frameworks continue to evolve, Ballards will remain committed to balancing innovation with responsibility. Our goal is to support the next generation of drivers while ensuring every one of them receives the training and experience they need to stay safe on the road.
The logistics industry cannot afford to put licences before lives, and at Ballards, we never will.
